Three quarters of disabled people have left a shop or business because of poor disability awareness. The Equality Act 2010 states that service providers must ensure that they meet the requirements of equality law. This includes making sure staff are sufficiently trained to deal with and support customers or service users, along with the need to make reasonable adjustments for disabled people.
For South Gloucestershire Council employees, this training links to ‘Empowering Others’ and ‘Customer and Community Focussed’ whereby employees are aware of how to meet the diverse needs of our customers and take care to be inclusive. These are part of the Behaviours within the Council's Framework.
This course will help staff to develop their understanding of the difference between the Social and Medical models of Disability, give guidance on legislation and best practice and help employees to understand how to better support disabled staff and customers/service users. The session will include a built in action plan addressing current barriers to supporting disabled people.
This 1-day workshop will provide the skills to help meet these essential service requirements.

The Early Years team are creating an opportunity for setting practitioners, childminders and reception teaching staff, of all levels and experiences to come together and reflect upon Equality, Diversity and Inclusion within the early years.
We are asking that all practitioners are made aware of this opportunity so those with a keen interest in this field are able to attend and contribute. So please exercise your power of inclusivity and ask each staff member if they would like to be a part of this.
This network is aimed at setting practitioners and childminders of all levels and experiences.
This course will provide opportunities for setting practitioners, and childminders to come together and reflect upon Equality, Diversity and Inclusion within the early years.
This will be an open forum for reflective discussion; therefore, an expectation of contribution is required from all attendees. A comfortable, albeit virtual space will be created to share and reflect upon key aspects of inclusive practice including; unconscious bias, tokenism in the absence of diversity, challenging racial incidents and talking about race in our settings.
Previous attendees are welcome to return to the network, however, please note that as we will be exploring similar themes, some content will be repeated.

We all know that Care Experienced people have a greater likelihood of experiencing inequalities. We also know that when ‘care experience’ is coupled with factors such as ‘Sex’, ‘Race’, ‘Disability’ etc. young people talk to us about experiencing ‘double discrimination’. In this session, let’s be clear about the inequalities faced by Care Experienced people and talk together about the actions we could all take to reduce and eliminate them.
Our tutor Dan Wood will ask this at the start of the session if is there anything in the broad area of ‘equality and diversity’ that you would like to find out about? Please consider this as Dan will weave an answer into the training session.
There is on-site parking which is free and the venue does have an onsite restaurant.
